Herons’ Moor celebrates Black History Month

Staff and pupils at Herons’ Moor Academy (HMA) are celebrating Black History Month across the school with a number of events and activities planned throughout October.

Kicking off the celebrations, the school held a whole-school assembly to explore why this is such an important time to recognise and celebrate the achievements, culture, and contributions of Black people throughout history and today.

Black History Month is an annual celebration and commemoration of Black history, culture, and achievements, observed in February in the United States and Canada, and October in the UK.

At HMA, the celebration provides a valuable opportunity for children to learn about diversity, fairness, and respect for others — key values that reflect the school’s commitment to placing belonging at the heart of everything it does.

Throughout the month, pupils will take part in a range of lessons and discussions, including learning about the history of slavery, understanding what it was, and exploring why it was abolished.

A school spokesperson said: “Black History Month is an important time for reflection, learning, and celebration.

“At Herons’ Moor Academy, we want our pupils to understand the past, appreciate the present, and be inspired to help shape a fair and inclusive future.

“We are proud to celebrate the richness of Black culture and history as part of our commitment to belonging and respect for all.”
